Pune to Get Relief from Heat as Cloudy Conditions Prevail
Pune, 17th March 2025: The scorching daytime temperatures in Pune are expected to dip by 2-3°C over the coming days due to increased cloud cover, according to officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Met officials predict that temperatures in Shivajinagar and Lohegaon will hover between 36°C and 38°C until March 21. Over the past week, Lohegaon crossed the 40°C mark twice, and several parts of the city have been experiencing sweltering conditions.
On Sunday, Shivajinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 38.2°C, while Lohegaon reached 39.5°C—both significantly above normal levels by 3°C and 4.3°C, respectively.
“A weakening of anticyclonic circulation over Maharashtra, combined with increased moisture in the atmosphere, has led to persistent cloud cover, especially during evening hours. This is bringing a slight drop in maximum temperatures,” an IMD official explained.
Although Pune may not receive rain, IMD forecasts suggest light showers and thunderstorms in isolated parts of Madhya Maharashtra, including Pune district, as well as in Marathwada and Vidarbha in the coming days.
“While cloud cover will bring some relief from extreme heat, any rainfall in Pune remains unlikely in the immediate future. However, some regions in the state may witness light showers,” the official added.
Despite the forecasted temperature dip, certain pockets of Pune remained notably warm. Koregaon Park recorded 39.7°C, making it the hottest location in the city, followed by Lohegaon, Magarpatta, and Chinchwad at 39.5°C.
“Koregaon Park has consistently recorded over 40°C in recent days. However, Sunday saw a slight drop, and we anticipate further cooling in the days ahead,” the official said.
Similar temperature trends were observed across Maharashtra. In Marathwada, Beed was the only location to cross 40°C, reaching 40.2°C, while other areas recorded temperatures ranging between 37°C and 39°C. Vidarbha saw six stations reporting over 40°C, with Chandrapur being the hottest at 41.6°C.
While the cooler temperatures offer relief to residents, the ongoing cloud cover may not be favorable for certain crops, particularly onions—one of Maharashtra’s key summer cash crops.
With cloud cover persisting and temperatures gradually decreasing, Pune residents can expect a slight respite from the recent heatwave. However, weather experts advise staying prepared for fluctuating conditions in the days to come.
