Pune, 26th July 2023: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is grappling with a significant challenge as it contends with the presence of thousands of unauthorized constructions within its jurisdiction. Despite efforts to tackle this issue, only 316 unauthorized constructions have been demolished so far, leaving citizens worried about the lack of decisive action.

Recently, during a legislative session, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde addressed the concerns raised by MLAs regarding the protection of unauthorized constructions in villages newly incorporated into the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). The Chief Minister assured that actions have been taken against holders of unauthorized structures as per the provisions of the Maharashtra Regional Planning and Town Planning Act, 1966. However, only 316 cases have undergone eviction proceedings, and 15 unauthorized constructions are currently proposed for demolition. Furthermore, six cases have led to the filing of criminal complaints, while 28 cases are pending for criminal proceedings.

One of the major worries shared by citizens and MLAs is the suspicion that unauthorized constructions are being shielded through the exchange of notices between construction owners and authorities, possibly involving financial compromises. Chief Minister Shinde has clarified that there is no evidence to substantiate such claims, and any action against officers and employees will only occur if concrete evidence is found.

The Unauthorized Construction Survey has revealed a staggering number of 7,631 unauthorized constructions that have been erected without proper permissions within the PMRDA limits. From 2015 to 2018, 1,213 illegal constructions were identified, and the numbers soared alarmingly to 6,418 from 2019 to 2022.
