Pune, 21st February 2025: In a major infrastructure boost, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has announced plans to develop 15 key interchanges to improve connectivity of the proposed Ring Road. The initiative aims to ease traffic congestion in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad by integrating major roads and facilitating faster transportation across the metropolitan region.

The total estimated expenditure for this project is ₹145 crore, which PMRDA claims will significantly decongest traffic and enhance mobility. The Ring Road will pass through nine talukas, including Maval, Khed, Shirur, Haveli, Daund, Purandar, Bhor, Velha, and Mulshi, connecting key highways such as Pune-Satara and Pune-Nagar roads. The project will also provide direct access to the upcoming Purandar Airport, ensuring seamless regional connectivity.

Out of the 15 planned interchanges, 12 already exist, while three new ones will be constructed. The new interchanges will cover a total road length of 12.10 km, enhancing the overall transport network.

As part of the plan, three major roads will be developed to improve traffic flow: the Mutha River Top to Urawade route (3.5 km) at an estimated cost of ₹19.25 crore, the Chandkhed to Kasarsai route (5 km) with a budget of ₹50 crore, and the Nighoje to Moi route (3.6 km) expected to cost ₹75 crore.

PMRDA’s Comprehensive Transport Plan

The Ring Road project is part of PMRDA’s larger integrated transport plan, covering 2,550 square kilometers of Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and surrounding areas. This ambitious plan, with a projected cost of ₹1.26 lakh crore, includes:

Expansion of metro rail lines
New routes and terminals for PMPML
Additional railway connectivity to improve access to Purandar Airport

Speaking on the initiative, Dr. Yogesh Mhase, Metropolitan Commissioner, PMRDA, stated, “The development of 15 interchanges connecting the Ring Road will improve connectivity and reduce congestion. The necessary approvals have been secured in the PMRDA budget, and ₹145 crore has been allocated for this purpose.”

The Ring Road project is expected to bring long-term relief to Pune’s traffic woes, offering a well-connected and efficient transport network for residents and businesses in the region.
