Pune: PMRDA’s 23-STP Plan Set To Transform River Indrayani’s Future

Pimpri Chinchwad, 13th December 2023: The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has submitted a comprehensive report for the initial stage of the Indrayani river rejuvenation project, outlining plans for the installation of 23 sewage treatment plants (STPs) along the river. The proposal has been forwarded to the National River Conservation Directorate for approval.
According to Deepak Singla, the additional commissioner of PMRDA, “The detailed project report (DPR) has been submitted for approval, and the 23 STPs are slated to be constructed in various villages falling under the jurisdiction of PMRDA, traversed by the Indrayani river. The project will cover a stretch of 82km along the river, with an allocated budget of Rs540 crore.”
The plan incorporates modern techniques to ensure the prevention of pollution in the Indrayani river within the PMRDA area, Singla added.
Awaiting approval from the National River Conservation Directorate (NRDC), officials are prepared to initiate on-ground work once the green signal is received. Similar DPRs are being prepared by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation and the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, as the Indrayani river flows through areas under their respective jurisdictions.
“A significant number of villages along the river lie within PMRDA’s jurisdiction, with primarily domestic effluent discharge in these areas. Industrial effluent discharge is mostly concentrated in the MIDC region,” noted another PMRDA official.
The Indrayani river rejuvenation project is designed to unfold in three phases. The initial phase focuses on making the river pollution-free. Subsequent phases will involve river widening and beautification under the riverfront development project. The overall project cost is estimated at Rs1,545 crore, with the central government contributing 60% and the state covering the remaining 40%.
