Pune, 1st May 2023: Over the last seven days, 300 motorists in Pune have had their driving licenses suspended due to reckless and negligent driving on city roads. The Pune police and the Regional Traffic Office (RTO) have taken this action to promote discipline and safety on the city’s roads. Additionally, they have sent a proposal for the suspension of driving licenses for another 250 motorists.

The driving license suspension initiative is part of a larger effort to instill respect for motor vehicle rules in Pune city. Pune Police Commissioner Retesh Kumarr said, “We want them to follow basic traffic rules to maintain their safety and the safety of others on the road. We want to bring some discipline among the motorists in the city.”

The police will use stringent provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act to punish motorists who drive recklessly and negligently on the roads, and will confiscate their licenses for suspension.

Kumarr said, “We have decided to act tough against traffic rule violators.” The police will send a proposal to suspend the driving license for three months for a first-time deliberate offence, six months for a second offence, and a lifetime suspension for a third offence. This action will reduce fatal and minor accidents on Pune roads if motorists follow traffic rules, Kumarr added.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Vijay Magar explained that the police have started invoking section 184 of the Motor Vehicle Act against motorists who violate rules such as wrong-side driving, installing modified silencers, drunk driving, violating no-entry or one-way rules, and riding triple-seat. The police collect visual evidence of the offences and record the driving license details. They then prepare a proposal with the offence details and send it to the RTO.

The police will only take stern action against motorists who deliberately break traffic rules and drive recklessly and negligently. Online evidence is maintained for the due course of action against them.
