Pune Police Arrest RTI Activist Sudhir Alhat For Demanding Rs 50 Lakh Extortion

Pune, 23rd December 2021: The Crime Branch of Pune city police on Wednesday night arrested RTI activist Sudhir Alhat for allegedly demanding Rs 50 lakh extortion money for taking back complaints against a police sub inspector who was earlier posted with Deccan Gymkhana police station.

Based on the complaint from a 48-year-old woman from Kothrud, an FIR has been registered at Shivajinagar police station against RTI activist Sudhir Ramchandra Alhat and his accomplices Subhash Alias Anna Jeur, Nilesh Jagtap and Vivek Konde.

According to police, the woman had approached Alhat for help after cases were registered against her husband between 2018 and 2020 at Deccan police station. Alhat claimed to have contact with a very senior police officer of Pune City Police and boasted about getting 32 officers suspended till now. Alhat made the woman to file five  complaints against PSI Sonawane on his letterhead and promised to get money within eight days for harassing her.

The complainant stated in FIR that Alhat called her home on December 2 and demanded Rs 50 lakh to take back the complaint on letterhead, else threatened to implicate her also in the case. “He also threatened to kill me. The other accused who were present there also pressurised me,” the complainant stated.

After getting a complaint with evidence of extortion demand, Crime Branch Unit 3 team led by Police Inspector Abhay Mahajan nabbed Alhat and a case was registered.

The action was taken under the guidance of Commissioner of Police Amitabh Gupta, Joint CP Ravindra Shisve, Additional CP (Crime) Ramnath Pokle, DCP (Crime) Shriniwas Ghadge and ACP (Crime 1) Gajanan Tompe.

The team included Police Sub Inspector Dattatray Kale and police personnel Mahesh Nimbalkar, Santosh Kshirsagar, Rajendra Marne, Ramdas Gonte, Sujit Pawar, Kalpesh Bansode, Sanjiv Kalambe, Dnyaneshwar Chite, Prakash Katte, Deepak Kshirsagar and Rakesh Tekawade.
