Hadapsar, 22nd March 2023: The Pune city police have recently arrested a gang involved in a scam that targeted elderly women with fake jewelry.
The gang members have been identified as Ganesh Vinayak Gaikwad, Ramesh Vinayak Gaikwad, Bandu Laxman Jadhav, Haribhau Mohan Kasule, and Mahadev Asaram Jadhav.
Senior Police Inspector Arvind Gokule, in-charge of Hadapsar police station, said, “The gang would throw fake ornaments like gold biscuits on the road to lure female travelers. When the women picked up the fake jewelry, the gang members would approach them and convince them to share the fake gold with them. The thieves would then tell the women that the gold was in a thick enclosure that cannot be broken and ask them to give their own gold ornaments in exchange for the fake gold claiming they were in large quantities.”
There are seven cases registered against them in Hadapsar, two by Bharti Vidyapeeth police station and one by Bhosari police station (Pimpri Chinchwad police). The police used CCTV footage to track down the gang’s members and were able to arrest them.
Inspector Gokule added, “During the investigation, we found that the gang had committed over 24 similar incidents in the past two years at Hadapsar Railway Station, Katraj Bus Depot, Bhosari Bus Depot, and Chakan Bus Depot. We have seized 128 grams of gold ornaments, a car, mobile handset, totally worth Rs 12.44 lakh from the accused.”
The investigation was conducted under the guidance of Additional Commissioner Ranjan Kumar Sharma, DCP (Zone 5) Vikrant Deshmukh, ACP Bajrang Desai and Senior Inspector Arvind Gokule. The team included Inspectors Digambar Shinde, Vishwas Dagle API Vijaykumar Shinde, PSI Avinash Shinde and police personnel Sushil Lonkar, Sandip Rathod, Sachin Jadhav, Sameer Pandule, Shahid Shaikh, Nikhil Pawar, Prashant Dhudhal, Prashant Tonpe, Sachin Gorkhe, Atul Pandharkar, Bhagwan Hambarde, Anirudh Sonawane, Ajit Madne, Chandrakant Rejitwad, Rashid Shaikh, Kundalik Keskar, Manoj Survase and Amol Danke.
