Pune Police Cyber Cell Helps People Get Back Rs 8 Lakh From Online Fraudsters, Cops Appeal To Complain Immediately

Pune, 14th May 2021: Immediate complaint by people about fraud transactions and prompt action by Pune city police cyber cell has helped complainants get back about Rs eight lakh in their accounts.

Police Sub-Inspector Ravindra Gawri has turned out to be the saviour for the complainants.

In a recent case, a teacher from Baner contacted the mobile number of an airline to find out how long before he has to get a COVID19 RT-PCR test done for air travel. He had found the number through a search on the internet. The accused offered to do the needful and sent him an online form and asked him to pay Rs 10 as a registration fee. After that, he asked the complainant to download two apps – anydesk and SMS Forwarder. Soon after he paid the Rs 10 registration fee, Rs 2.4 lakh transaction was done through his credit and debit cards.

He immediately rushed to the Cyber Police Station located at the Pune police headquarters in Shivajinagar. He met PSI Gawari who understood the seriousness of the incident and immediately contacted the nodal officer of the concerned payment merchant on the information received from the complainant and informed them about the fraudulent transaction. Police managed to get the refund of Rs 2.4 lakh back into the complainant’s account.

Similarly, this week, the cyber cell helped a computer engineer from Dhanori get back Rs 1.93 lakh, a businessman from Kothrud got a refund of Rs 1.5 lakh and a senior citizen from Bibvewadi got Rs 97,000 in various cases of cyber fraud. In another case, a person had lost Rs 1.25 lakh after sharing OTP and cops have helped him get the refund. Police have helped people get a total of Rs eight lakh which they had lost to the online fraudsters.

Tips to prevent online fraud

  • Do not download Mobile Clone App or any app sent by strangers
  • Do not open or share any unauthorized link
  • Do not share OTP, credit-debit card numbers
