Pune, 30th August 2021: Acting on a tip-off from the Military Intelligence (MI) unit of the Army, Pune police recently detained seven people over the suspicion of illegally entering India.

Though they had told the Hadapsar police station that they had come from Bangladesh between 1995 and 2011, police have not yet seized any documents to prove their Bangladeshi citizenship. So far no case has been registered in this regard.

According to officials, seven suspects who had migrated to India illegally and are currently living in the Hadapsar area of Pune were recently brought to the Hadapsar police station for questioning.

They have been identified as Dilawar Mandal, SA Sheikh, Farooq Sheikh, NR Sheikh, Kamrul Mandal, Munir Sheikh and Humayun Sheikh. The men told police during interrogation that they were Bangladeshis. They came to India in 1995, 2002, 2007, 2008 and 2011 via Kolkata and reached Pune. These people are currently working as rag pickers in the Mantarwadi waste depot.

The police investigation also revealed that after coming to Pune, they had procured Indian documents such as Aadhar cards and AN cards.

Police have decided to take further action against the suspects after seizing documents proving their Bangladeshi citizenship. Police have now handed over the suspects to lawyer Aslam Syed. He has accepted the responsibility of presenting the suspects when necessary for a police inquiry.

According to the lawyer, these people have been living here for many years. They got married here and have children. One of them bought land in Pune and submitted his documents to the police. They are cooperating with the police in the investigation.

DCP (Zone 5) Namrata Patil said that enquiry in the case is going on.
