Pune Police Implements Innovative CCTV Initiative To Enhance Traffic Compliance
Pune, 10th July 2023: In a bid to improve traffic compliance and penalty recovery, the Pune Police Traffic Branch has launched a new initiative involving the installation of CCTV cameras on ten police vehicles.
Approved by Pune Police Commissioner Retesh Kumaarr, these specially equipped vehicles will be strategically positioned in busy areas lacking surveillance cameras to monitor real-time traffic violations. The initiative is currently in its pilot phase, with potential expansion in the future.
DCP (Traffic) Vijay Magar explained, “By exclusively scanning the streets, roads, and bylanes for traffic law violators, this technology will assist in analyzing traffic scenarios and increasing the collection of traffic fines.”
The newly installed cameras will record traffic violations, capturing essential information such as date, time, and geo-location, which will be forwarded to the relevant traffic divisions for penalty recovery. The monitoring of violations will encompass various zones, including interior roads, intersections, and main roads, where offenders often go undetected.
The innovative technology employed in this initiative allows for the detection and tracking of multiple vehicles within the field of view of a single camera. All video feeds from the CCTV cameras will be stored in a data center and live-streamed to the Command Control Centre (CCC), equipped with a video wall capable of displaying footage from numerous cameras simultaneously.
This forward-thinking approach demonstrates a commitment to leveraging digital technology to enhance traffic law enforcement and optimize fine collection. The insights gained from the pilot program will inform future actions and potential expansion to other vehicles.
Magar emphasized, “The digital information collected regarding fines and the types of offenses detected at specific locations will guide our next steps.”
As technology continues to shape law enforcement practices, this initiative by the Pune Police is expected to promote compliance and enhance safety on the city’s streets for all road users.
