Pune Police Seek Isolation of Bandu, Krishna Andekar in Jail as Crime Linked to Their Gang Continue in City
Pune, 26th May 2026: Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar has urged the state prison department to isolate key members of the Andekar gang in jail, after investigations revealed that crimes linked to the gang continue to be carried out outside despite its leaders being in judicial custody.
Investigation by police in some cases reported in the recent time, has pointed to a series of murder and attempted murder incidents driven by old enmity and gang rivalry, reportedly orchestrated from behind bars.
In this context, Commissioner Kumar has written to the prison administration seeking strict restrictions on key accused persons, including the gang leader Suryakant alias Bandu Andekar and his son Krishna Andekar, who are currently lodged in separate jails.
Police said relatives of accused persons in the murder case of former corporator Vanraj Andekar have been targeted in recent incidents. Two serious attacks were reported from the Balaji Nagar area of Dhankawadi and Khadi Machine Chowk in Pune. In one of the cases, Akshay Mhaske was brutally attacked in an attempt on his life but survived.
Investigations suggest that the incidents are part of an ongoing gang rivalry, with officials stating that the Andekar gang continues to coordinate activities from within prison, posing a major challenge to law enforcement agencies.
To curb such operations, the police commissioner has recommended a series of measures, including isolation of key accused inmates, restrictions on family visits, a ban on phone calls from jail, and the use of video conferencing for court appearances instead of physical production.
Currently, main accused Suryakant alias Bandu Andekar is lodged in Dhule district jail, while his son Krishna Andekar is in Nandurbar jail. Both face serious charges including extortion and murder and have been booked under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), remaining in judicial custody.
With concerns mounting over continued criminal activity allegedly being run from inside prison, Pune Police have stepped up action to dismantle the gang’s network.
