Pune, 16th September 2021: Pune Police Commissioner Amitabh Gupta Thursday said that ample efforts are being taken to ensure that police station staffers are trained in the art of detecting cybercrimes by upskilling the policemen at the police stations. The step has been undertaken to reduce the pressure of registration and detection of cybercrimes at the lone cyber police station at Shivajinagar in the wake of the rising number of rising crimes being reported across the city.
Gupta was addressing media persons during a special interaction organised by the Pune Union of Working Journalists (PUWJ) at Patrakar Bhavan in Navi Peth. PUWJ president Mangesh Kolapkar and General Secretary Dr Sujit Tambde were also present on the occasion.
“We have put a system in place and a lot of cybercrime cases are being detected which were not taking place earlier. A lot of improvement has happened in the field. We got 18,000 applications and every police station is being trained to handle cybercrime cases, particularly detection. We register the case at the cyber police station and the case is sent to the respective police station for detection,” he said.
Replying to a query on the NCRB report stating that murders in the city have increased and also crime percentage of Pune has risen by 121 %, he said, “Statistics can be leading and misleading. IPC 188 cases have increased during the lockdown. The first six months saw zero crime but later due to COVID 19 measures in place, IPC 188 cases went up significantly. While murders have gone up by one or two compared with the previous year. Corona and lockdown has led to the increase in the number of statistics.”
Referring to the crackdown on autorickshaw drivers, he said, “I am bringing RTO, PMPML, PMC and all stakeholders on one table wherein we will use technology and less manpower to curb the incidents related to women safety. Whatever the citizens need will be done for the safety and security of women.”
When asked about anti-terrorism measures being taken by the city police, commissioner Gupta said that top priority was being given to preventing crimes against women and anti-terrorism measures aimed at making the city safe for the citizens.
