Pune Police Take Action Against 2,500 Notorious Criminals Ahead of Maharashtra Elections

Pune, 18th November 2024: In preparation for the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Elections, the police conducted a search for over 2,500 notorious criminals in Pune city to prevent any potential law and order issues. During the combing operation and blockade carried out over the past two days, the Crime Branch took action against 15 known criminals. Additionally, 25 pistols and 38 live cartridges were recovered from repeat offenders.

To prevent any untoward incidents related to the elections, 1,513 individuals with criminal records were searched at police stations across five zones of the Pune City Police Commissionerate from November 14th to 16th. The Crime Branch also took action against 990 notorious criminals within this two-day period. Thirteen criminals were arrested under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act of 1981 (MPDA Act). The Crime Branch reported the seizure of 81 weapons, including knives and other sharp objects, from the accused.

Actions Taken by the Crime Branch:

– Seizure of Illegal Pistols: 25 Charges, 22 Arrested

– Unlawful Possession of Firearms – 13 Charges, 13 Arrested

– Possession of Drugs: 11 Charges, 24 Arrested

– Externed: 15 charges, 10 Arrested

– Gambling: 16 charges filed, 114 Arrested

– Vehicle Theft: 5 Charges, 6 Arrested

– Copyright Violation: 2 Charges, 2 Arrested

– Essentials: 2 Charges, 3 arrested

– Preventive Action: 163 Charges, 190 Arrested

Cigarettes and Tobacco Products: 120 Charges, 121 Arrested

– Absconding Accused: 14 Charges, 15 Arrested

Amitesh Kumar, Commissioner of Police for Pune City, stated, “Combing operations and blockades are being conducted in Pune ahead of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Elections. Legal action is being taken against criminals. Public peace must not be disturbed. Everyone should be cautious not to violate the model code of conduct.”
