Pune Police to Introduce First-of-its-Kind Device to Control Noise in Pubs
Pune, 4th September 2025: In a first-of-its-kind move in India, Pune Police is set to install special devices in pubs and nightclubs to automatically control noise levels and curb late-night disturbances caused by loud DJs and music systems.
According to police sources, the device will be directly connected to the sound system of pubs. It will monitor decibel levels in real time and automatically reduce the volume if it exceeds the permissible limit. If the rules are repeatedly violated, the device will shut down the entire sound system. Police officials claim this is the first such experiment in the country to tackle rising noise pollution from nightlife hubs.
Over the past two decades, Pune’s nightlife has grown rapidly in areas such as Koregaon Park, Baner, Hinjawadi, Wakad, Vadgaonsheri, and Kondhwa. With the city’s rise as an IT hub and education centre, pubs have become popular gathering spots for young professionals and students. However, citizens have long raised concerns over loud music in pubs operating close to residential areas.
Several complaints have been filed with both the police and the courts, citing sleepless nights and public nuisance. Incidents of fights and brawls in pubs, often linked to alcohol consumption, have also been reported.
Police raids have uncovered drugs, hookah, and other illegal substances, while action has frequently been taken against establishments violating the 10 pm deadline for loud music.
Despite repeated crackdowns, noise pollution has persisted as pubs continued to flout rules, often due to competition to attract customers with high-volume music and DJs. Officials said the new device offers a technical solution to this challenge.
In addition to regulating volume, the system will send immediate alerts to the police whenever a violation occurs, enabling swift action. Authorities believe the initiative will balance the interests of nightlife businesses with the rights of citizens to peaceful surroundings.
