Pune: POSCO Maharashtra Steel Takes Proactive Steps Towards Community Engagement and Cleanliness Drive

Pune, 5th July 2023: POSCO Maharashtra Steel, a South Korean multinational steel-making company, has been operating in India since 2012. With its corporate office located in WTC, Kharadi, Pune, and a manufacturing facility in Vile-Bhagad MIDC, Taluka Mangaon, District Raigad, Maharashtra, the company has made significant contributions to the Indian automotive, electrical equipment, and home appliance industries by providing high-quality steel. It has created around 2000 direct and approximately 10,000 indirect employment opportunities.

On July 5, the company’s corporate office conducted a cleaning drive in collaboration with its employees to raise awareness and sensitize people around the EON IT park and World Trade Centre area in Pune. Around 60 employees, including the Chief Managing Director and Directors of POSCO Maharashtra, participated actively for approximately two hours. The drive aimed to promote the habit of waste management and encourage people to keep the area clean. It shed light on the fact that even educated individuals sometimes litter or dispose of waste irresponsibly, causing chaos and deteriorating conditions. POSCO believes in playing a responsible citizenship role and endeavors to make its employees proactive in their behavior. By actively participating in such activities, POSCO aims to create a happy and safe working environment and foster positive awareness.

The company’s sustainable and impactful Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives at its plant location focus on various areas:

Education infrastructure and quality improvement: POSCO Maharashtra engages its employees continuously to support education initiatives. This includes providing bus support to around 80 students from six villages since 2012, repairing eight schools, fully constructing one school, distributing e-learning kits to eight schools, and distributing school kits to 600 students from 28 ZP schools in 2022 and 1,112 students from 41 ZP schools in 2023. Furthermore, POSCO has provided 250 bunk beds and two commercial washing and drying machines to the Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram Residential School in Mangaon. The company has also initiated a Sisterhood Relationship Development Program, assigning 12 schools to 12 departments for regular employee engagement to improve the quality of education.
Environment protection through tree plantation: POSCO Maharashtra collaborates with farmers, considering their livelihood interests, to plant horticultural species that ensure better survival rates. In 2022, the company distributed 3,427 fruit tree saplings to approximately 750 farmers across 28 villages. The plan for 2023 is to distribute over 5,000 saplings.
Health improvement: POSCO conducts health check-up camps and provides necessary support, including identifying and facilitating cataract surgeries for marginalized farmers. To date, 110 farmers have benefited from these initiatives.
Other welfare programs: POSCO actively supports the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao campaign by depositing rupees 50,000 in fixed deposits in the name of newly born girl children in nearby Gram Panchayats, aiming to balance the gender ratio and promote girl education. Since 2017 to 2021, 71 girls have benefited from this program. POSCO also responds to disasters, including the COVID-19 pandemic, by providing support and organizing blood donation camps every three months. In 2022, 371 units of voluntary blood donations were collected, highlighting the company’s commitment to noble causes. Furthermore, POSCO promotes women empowerment and rural livelihood development through awareness programs and exposure visits for Self Help Groups to successful places like Ahilya Mahila Mandal in Pen and VedVaudev Pratisththan’s Gaushala in Pune.

Global Good Citizenship Week 2023

Posco celebrates its “Global Good Citizenship Week (Employee Volunteering Program)” every year in all global locations by conducting various activities by encouraging employee volunteering, this year “Global Good Citizenship Week” period was from 9th to 16th June 2023. Posco Maharashtra Steel conducted various activities at its plant location of Vile-Bhagad MIDC peripheral villages as follows…

● Education support program in 4 schools – conducted science demos to the students like solar boat, solar car, Suspension Bridge,Magnet power, Self-Powered Flashlight, headphone etc. by easy assembling method, to motivate students towards science and innovation

● Sponsored 105 school kit in which school bag, stationary, water colors and drawing book etc.

● Tree plantation – Mango and Banana Trees planted by POSCO employees in farmers land at 8 locations (villages) by planting 257 saplings with participative method (pits prepared by farmers) and saplings were arranged and planted by POSCO Maharashtra. 36 volunteers, including POSCO’s Deputy Managing Director…
