Pune Power Cut: Citizens Blame PMC–MSEDCL Coordination Failure in Mahalunge
Balewadi, 2nd April 2026: Residents of Equilife Homes CHS in Shitaladevi Nagar, Mahalunge, have lodged complaints with the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) after a prolonged power outage allegedly caused by damage to an underground electricity cable during excavation work.
According to residents, the power supply was disrupted around 12 pm after a water pipeline excavation carried out by PMC reportedly damaged an underground power cable in the area. The incident occurred in Ward 9 of Mahalunge, leaving several households without electricity for hours.
Residents claimed that the prolonged outage caused major inconvenience as home inverter backups were also exhausted, leaving families without power or internet connectivity. Many residents, including working professionals who rely on electricity and internet for work, said the situation had severely affected their daily routines and professional responsibilities.
In their complaint, citizens alleged a lack of coordination between PMC and MSEDCL during infrastructure work. They claimed that similar incidents had occurred during the previous monsoon season as well, raising concerns over the absence of proper mapping of underground electrical infrastructure before excavation activities.
Residents further alleged that while the outage occurred before rainfall began, officials later cited heavy rain and fallen trees as reasons for delays in restoring power supply.
Citizens have urged both PMC and MSEDCL to improve coordination during infrastructure projects and ensure that such disruptions do not recur. They have also demanded a clear timeline for the restoration of electricity in the area.
The affected locality includes Equilife Homes CHS in Shitaladevi Nagar, Mahalunge, where residents reported a complete blackout for several hours.
Residents have also appealed to the local elected representative to intervene and expedite the restoration process.
Officials from PMC and MSEDCL are yet to issue a detailed statement regarding the incident.
