Pune: Primary School Timings Revised Till August 31 as Teachers Deployed for Election Commission’s Voter Roll Revision Drive
Pune, 1st July 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has temporarily revised the timings of primary schools across its jurisdiction from July 1 to August 31, 2026, to facilitate the deployment of teachers for the Election Commission of India’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
According to a circular issued by the PMC’s Primary Education Department, the revised schedule will apply to both PMC-run and private primary schools. During this period, schools will function from 7:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
The civic administration said the decision has been taken to ensure that students’ academic activities continue with minimal disruption while allowing teachers sufficient time to perform election-related duties. Teachers have been assigned to assist the Election Commission in the ongoing voter list revision exercise.
The PMC clarified that, unlike last year, the change in school timings has not been introduced for academic or student welfare reasons. In 2025, school timings were modified to allow students adequate sleep and make morning sessions more convenient. This year, however, the revision has been made solely to support the Election Commission’s work.
Administrative Officer of the Primary Education Department, Sunanda Wakhare, and Deputy Commissioner Vasundhara Barve have directed the headmasters of all PMC-run and private primary schools to immediately inform parents about the temporary change. Schools have also been instructed to ensure that students and parents do not face any inconvenience due to the revised schedule.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India has launched a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across Maharashtra, along with 15 other states and three Union Territories. As part of the exercise, teachers will serve as Booth Level Officers (BLOs) to help update and verify electoral rolls ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
The PMC said the temporary change in school timings aims to strike a balance between maintaining uninterrupted academic activities and supporting the Election Commission’s electoral roll revision process.
