Pune: Prisoners Now Have Video Calling Facility In Maharashtra
Yerwada, 22nd May 2023: A video call facility will be made available through the e-prison system so that foreigner prisoners incarcerated in various prisons of Maharashtra state can communicate with their families. Apart from that, the poor prisoners of various districts who are unable to go home due to financial conditions will also be able to chat with their relatives through video calls.
The prison administration has given priority to foreign prisoners to communicate with their relatives. Accordingly, time is being fixed for video calling by the concerned relatives in the e-interview section under the e-prison system.
For that, complete information about the relatives has to be included in the interview section. After submitting the information of the prisoners who require an e-interview, the information is verified by the prison administration. After that, the administration will send a link to the relatives of the concerned prisoners to facilitate video calling.
It will help the financially unfit prisoners to have direct contact with their relatives, including 645 foreign prisoners who have been in jail for years.
Amitabh Gupta, Additional Director General of Police and Inspector General, Prisons Department informed, “Preference has been given to communicating with relatives of foreign and domestic poor prisoners in various jails across the state through e-interview. Accordingly, after fixing the time of the interview, communication will be done through video calling. This will help to remove depression among the detainees.”
Due to financial constraints, relatives of prisoners in various areas do not come to meet the prisoner in jails. Apart from that, due to technical information barriers, the families do not communicate with the concerned prisoners. It has been suggested that the jail administration should take notice of such prisons as well.
Therefore, by registering the information of the families of the concerned online via e-interview, the poor prisoners will also be contacted with their relatives. The e-interview has been kept for 10 minutes, and the prisoners are obliged to converse within the scheduled time. E-interview opportunity has been created for convicted prisoners twice a month and raw prisoners four times a week.
The government has decided to implement a smart card scheme on a sponsored basis for newly admitted prisoners in Yerwada Jail. According to the information registered by the concerned prisoner, the smart card can be used to communicate with relatives through the phone. In particular, this scheme will free the families from the maze of paperwork with the police and prison administration due to direct communication with relatives.
