Pune: Proposal To Include Seven Villages In PCMC Still Pending For Eight Years
Pimpri Chinchwad, 31st March 2023: The decision to include seven villages near the city in the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) was made in the municipal meeting in 2015. However, the government has not taken any decision on the proposal for the last eight years. The city has a population of around 30 lakhs and has been expanding rapidly.
In addition, movements have started to include the Dehu road Cantonment Board in the Municipal Corporation. The Pimpri-Chinchwad municipality was formed on 4th March 1970 by merging the areas of four Gram Panchayats namely Pimpri, Chinchwad, Akurdi, and Bhosari. The municipal corporation was established on 11th October 1982, and the PCMC earned the reputation of being the richest municipal corporation in Asia due to the huge income received in the form of taxes from large enterprises.
As the population in the municipal area increased, the municipal corporation’s delimitation increased on 11th September 1997, with many villages coming under the Municipal Corporation. There are currently 5.94 lakh properties in the city. The proposal to include seven villages in the Pimpri-Chinchwad municipality is still pending with the government, despite being passed by the Municipal Assembly in 2015.
The state government has given instructions to the municipal administration to submit detailed feedback on what the situation will be after the inclusion of the Dehu road Cantonment Board in the PCMC. If Dehu road is included in the municipality, a new ward will have to be created for the election. The decision regarding the inclusion of these villages is still pending with the government.
