Pune: Public Catch One Thief in Handewadi Road Phone Thefts; Others Absconding

Handewadi Road, 27th January 2026: A series of mobile phone thefts have been reported near Handewadi Road, particularly around Shriram Chowk, raising safety concerns among local residents.
In one incident, a suspected thief was caught by members of the public and handed over to the police. However, the stolen mobile phones have not yet been recovered. According to victims, the phones were taken by another accomplice who managed to flee the spot. His identity remains unknown.
Ashok, one of the victims, said his phone is still missing and switched off, and that several people in the area have reported similar incidents. “My phone has not been recovered. Another person took it and ran away, and he did not reveal his name. My phone is still switched off. Many people near Shriram Chowk and Handewadi Road have complained about similar mobile phone thefts happening in the same way,” he said.
The accused who was caught reportedly told the police that he was part of a group involved in repeated mobile phone thefts in the area. While one suspect has been arrested, other members of the gang are still absconding.
Police have launched an investigation and are verifying multiple complaints related to similar thefts in the Handewadi Road and Shriram Chowk area. Residents have been advised to remain alert and report any suspicious activity to the authorities immediately.
