Purandar, 6th March 2025: The sweet and large-sized Anjir (Figs) from Purandar taluka in Pune district have garnered significant demand in the global market, bringing joy to local farmers. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently acknowledged the success of Purandar’s figs, praising the farmers for their hard work in transforming a drought-prone region into a thriving fruit-growing area.

Despite being known as a drought-prone taluka, Purandar’s farmers have successfully cultivated fig, custard apple, and guava orchards through efficient water management. The figs, grown in a humid climate with minimal water, are renowned for their sweet taste and large size, fetching high prices in cities like Pune and Mumbai.

During a recent event in Delhi, PM Modi highlighted how Purandar’s figs, once limited to local markets, are now reaching global consumers. He commended the farmers for their transformation from local to international producers, mentioning Purandar figs alongside other successful Indian agricultural products like Pulwama’s snow peas and Kashmir’s cricket bats.

The recognition from PM Modi has raised hopes for increased government support for fig processing industries in Purandar. Former Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar has also thanked Modi for his appreciation of the farmers’ efforts.

Purandar, known for its fig production, has orchards spread across the whole tehsil. Farmers primarily use organic farming methods and modern technology to boost production. The taluka has 452 hectares under fig cultivation, with two harvesting seasons annually.

Currently, farmers are earning a wholesale price of 120 rupees per kg for their figs, boosting their economic well-being. These figs are being exported across India and to Europe as well.
