Pune, August 24, 2020: After leaving the station, now we would be able to find out where the train has a train reached at any given point of time. The National Train Enquiry System (NTES) is being upgraded for the location of trains, so that we can get the real time updates for the locations of the running trains. For this, a device is being installed in the engines that reads the speed of trains and releases updates based on GPS.

At present, we get station-to-station updates of the locations of the trains, depending on what time did a train arrive at a station, and what time it departed. The location update while the train is in-between two stations is based on the calculation of the train’s average speed. With the introduction of the upgrade system, you will be able to know in real time whether the train is passing through a jungle or is standing on the outer, along with knowing the actual time of arrival at the railway station.

According to a senior officer of the Central Railway, “The real time information system will provide accurate information about the location of the trains. We have already begun the work for the same. This will greatly facilitate the passengers. The device has been installed in 2,700 engines. It will provide second-to-second information on trains.”

In the first phase, the real time information system has been installed in 2,700 electric locomotives. In the second phase, it will be installed in 6,000 engines.

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) will monitor trains, in this initiative, on the basis of GPS. ISRO has also started working on the same through satellite.

Presently, in the National Train Enquiry System (NTES), when a train enters the yard or station, the time data is fed to the system by a controller sitting in the control room. This is how the location of a train is updated.
