Pune Ranked Second Safest City In India After Kolkata – NCRB Safety Index

Pune, 6th December 2023: Pune, renowned as the cultural and educational capital of the country, has secured the second position in terms of safety, according to the central government’s National Crime Records Bureau’s (NCRB) ‘Crime in India 2022’ report. Kolkata, for the third consecutive year, has achieved the top position, making it the safest city in the nation.

The NCRB’s report, based on data collected from 26 states, union territories, and central agencies, reveals that Kolkata recorded the lowest number of cognizable crimes per lakh population among metropolitan cities. Kolkata’s remarkable achievement is reflected in its reporting of 86.7 cognizable crimes per lakh population. In comparison, Pune registered a ratio of 280.7, and Hyderabad reported 299.2 cognizable crimes per lakh population.

As per the NCRB report, the notifiable crimes per 1 lakh population for the years 2021 and 2023 are as follows:

– Kolkata: 103.4 (2021) – 86.7 (2023)
– Pune: 256.8 (2021) – 280.7 (2023)
– Hyderabad: 259.9 (2021) – 299.2 (2023)

Retesh Kumaarr, Commissioner of Police, Pune, emphasized, “Planned efforts are being made by the city police force to reduce crime in Pune. Various schemes are being implemented for the safety of women and to prevent juvenile delinquency. Efforts are being made to prevent criminal incidents through the collaboration of vigilant Pune citizens and the proactive measures undertaken by the police.”
