Pune Residents Lose Rs 75 Lakh to Stock Market Investment Scams
Pune, 18th November 2024: Fraud cases in Pune have been on the rise, driven by the allure of stock market investments. Cybercriminals have swindled citizens of Rs 75 lakhs in several incidents.
In one case, a senior citizen from the Pashan area was cheated of Rs 15 lakh 45 thousand by being promised high returns from stock market investments. The victim filed a complaint at the Chaturshringi Police Station. The thieves had sent a message to the senior citizen’s mobile three months ago, inviting him to invest in the stock market. They promised good returns and asked him to deposit the money into their bank accounts. Over time, the victim deposited money into the thieves’ accounts, but he never received any refunds. Upon realizing he had been defrauded, he reported the incident to the police. Police Inspector (Crime) Puri is investigating the matter further.
In another case, a person from the Warje area was cheated out of Rs 17 lakh 36 thousand with a similar investment offer. A case has been registered, and Police Inspector (Crime) Badakh is currently investigating. Additionally, Rs 1 lakh was stolen from the bank account of an elderly woman in the Pashan area due to the theft of her confidential account information. She has filed a complaint at the Chaturshringi Police Station.
In yet another incident, a youth from the Chandan Nagar area was lured into investing in the stock market and lost Rs 19 lakh 38 thousand. The youth has filed a complaint at the Chandan Nagar Police Station, and Senior Police Inspector Mane is investigating.
Fraud cases have surged due to fears of legal consequences. In one such case, a senior citizen from the Model Colony area was cheated of Rs 13 lakh 30 thousand. The thieves pretended to have found drugs in the elderly complainant’s car and, posing as members of the Mumbai Police, claimed that money had to be deposited immediately to avoid arrest. After the victim deposited the money, the thieves turned off their phones. Police Inspector (Crime) Nanaware from the Shivajinagar Police Station is investigating the case.
