Pune Residents Suffer As PMC's Sloppy Planning Triggers Traffic Chaos In NIBM-Mohammadwadi

Kondhwa, 3rd April 2023: More than 10,000 residents of NIBM-Mohammadwadi faced a traffic nightmare today, with two alternate roads suggested by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) overflowing with vehicles. The PMC had closed the main Mohammadwadi-NIBM link road for slope reduction work near Anandvan Forest, without proper planning for the traffic that would be diverted to the alternative routes.

The traffic jam was compounded by the absence of police personnel at the spot.

The first alternative road, from Mohammadwadi via Dorabjee Mall through Shree Bhairavnath Deosthan property toward NIBM road, was completely choked with traffic, causing long delays for school goers, office goers, patients, senior citizens, women, and all other categories of commuters.

The second alternative route, from Dorabjee Mall to Marvel Sangria, was in a state of disrepair, with crater-like potholes causing long traffic jams.

Daljeet Goraya, NIBM Annexe Forum Director, criticized the PMC for the lack of planning and said that it was a completely mindless job by the PMC. The citizens are suffering and there is a need to restart the slope area traffic again, otherwise the Mohammawadi, Undri, and NIBM area will face the worst traffic jams of the decade. Goraya suggested that the PMC pay a fine to the people for causing the loss of their time, which is a precious asset.

Atik Pathan, a resident of Gemini Housing Society, echoed Goraya’s comments and said that the issue of the road had been highlighted repeatedly over the last couple of years. However, this adhoc action by the PMC with limited planning on alternate arrangements has added to the residents’ woes.

Hemlata Deshmukh, a senior citizen, slammed the PMC for its irresponsible behavior and endangering the lives of citizens. She pointed out that the PMC had earned Rs 223 crores as property tax from the area since 2015, but had not spent much on developing road infrastructure in the area. She demanded that the PMC officials be sent to jail for their actions, which have messed up the civic life of the citizens and are pro-builder lobby.

The situation has been exacerbated by the soaring temperatures and snarling traffic queues, which have made the daily commute for routine chores a nightmare. The residents have called on the PMC to resolve the issue as soon as possible and restart the traffic flow in the area. They have also demanded that the PMC officials be held accountable for their actions and the inconvenience caused to the citizens.
