Pune, 5th April 2023: Pune residents will have to wait a bit longer for the decision regarding the 40 percent exemption in property tax as legal proceedings have been completed, but approval is still awaited in the cabinet meeting.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced that property tax bills for the new financial year (2023-24) will begin from May 1, as the decision on the exemption has not yet been taken.

According to Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar, the deadline for payment of the levied properties has been extended until April 30 after the deduction of 40 percent discount. As a result, no penalty will be levied on defaulters in April.

In 2019, the Maharashtra state government cancelled the 40 percent discount in property tax that had been in place since 1969, resulting in newly assessed properties being taxed at the full rate. The discount is now only being levied on the property that was taxed before 2019, leading to thousands of property earners in the city owing large payments with subsidized arrears.

After the Kasba by-election, newly elected MLA Ravindra Dhangekar, along with MLAs from Mahavikas Aghadi and BJP MLAs, approached Chief Minister Eknath Shinde for the restoration of the 40 percent concession. In a meeting during the budget session, it was decided to restore the discount, but the cabinet decision is still pending.

Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar stated that the citizens will have to pay with the correction after the decision of the state government, and the printing of new bills will depend on when the state government implements the 40 percent tax rebate. The municipality is also offering a five percent discount on general tax to those who pay property tax until May 31, with the deadline now extended to June 30. The administration has decided to extend the deadline until April 30 for property holders who have received more bills due to the withdrawal of the 40 percent exemption and those who have not paid the same.
