Suspect in Kerala railway fire case arrested by Maharashtra ATS in Ratnagiri

Ratnagiri, 5th April 2023: The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested Shah Rukh Saifi, the accused in the Kerala Railway fire case, with the help of central intelligence agencies. Saifi was found sleeping at Ratnagiri railway station and taken into custody.

He was injured during the incident and is currently undergoing treatment at a government hospital in Ratnagiri. A senior officer of the Maharashtra ATS stated that Saifi had confessed to his crime and the process of handing him over to the Kerala Police is underway. A team of Kerala Police has also left for Ratnagiri.

On April 2, an unidentified person entered a Kannur-bound train, threw an inflammable substance on the passengers and set the train on fire. Three people died while trying to escape by jumping from the train, while the accused managed to escape.

Police seized a bag, some written documents in Hindi and a mobile phone from the spot. It has come to the notice of the police that a person from Uttar Pradesh was contacted through this mobile. After the incident, the Kerala Police prepared a sketch of the suspect with the help of a witness. Several teams were sent to Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and other states to find the suspect.

Saifi, a carpenter by profession, is 30 years old. According to sources, he will be handed over to the Kerala Police for further investigation.
