Pune, 28th December 2024: Makar Sankranti, the first major Hindu festival of the Gregorian New Year, is being celebrated amidst rising prices of essential items, including the traditional tilgul (jaggery and sesame candy). Women organizing Haldi-Kumkum programs, a key part of the festivities, are feeling the pinch as higher prices of household items strain their budgets.

The customary greeting, “Take tilgul and speak sweetly,” is overshadowed by increased costs. Tilgul, priced at ₹150–₹170 per kilogram last year, now costs ₹180–₹220 per kilogram—a ₹55–₹70 hike—further burdening households. While markets are bustling, many women are reportedly hesitant to make purchases.

Makar Sankranti marks the Sun’s transition into the Capricorn zodiac, signaling the end of winter and the onset of longer days. Celebrated nationwide, the festival symbolizes agricultural prosperity and new beginnings, with traditions like kite flying, sweet distribution, and rituals fostering cultural unity. For farmers, it’s a thanksgiving to nature, ushering in hope for the new harvest season.
