Pune: Rising River Levels in PCMC Area Due to Continuous Rainfall
Varad Bhatkhande
Pimpri, 1st October 2023: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) area is currently experiencing a significant surge in the water levels of several rivers, including the Pawana, Indrayani, and Mula. This alarming rise can be attributed to the continuous rainfall over the past few days, particularly in the Maval taluka region.
One major contributor to this situation is the Pavana Dam, which has seen a continuous inflow of water, leading to its storage level reaching 100%. As of 4:00 PM today, the water level at Pavana Dam stands at 613.26 meters, with a total discharge of 3608.60 cusecs. The dam has received a total of 2748 mm of rainfall.
In a controlled release effort, 910 cusecs of water were released from the dam’s spillway at 4:00 PM. Plans are in place to increase this to 1,820 cusecs at 6:00 PM, subject to further adjustments as needed. The Central Flood Control of PCMC is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating efforts to ensure residents’ safety.
Another factor contributing to the rise in river levels is the Mulshi Dam. Its reservoir is currently at 99.08% storage capacity, with a 4.50 dalghami available margin. Due to increased rainfall in the dam’s catchment area, a controlled release of water into the Mula River began at 4:00 PM today, set to increase to 1,820 cusecs at 6:00 PM. Authorities are prepared to make further adjustments as necessary.
Residents in the PCMC area have reported a noticeable increase in water levels in the Indrayani River, which flows through areas like Moshi and Dudulgaon. This rise is a direct result of the heavy rainfall experienced not only in the PCMC area but also in the Maval region.
Local authorities and disaster management teams are on high alert, continuously monitoring the situation. Advisories have been issued to residents living in vulnerable areas. Citizens are urged to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow instructions from local authorities to ensure their safety during this period.
