Pune, 14th May 2026: In a major boost to the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) riverfront development project, the Maharashtra Cabinet has approved the transfer of 52,851 square metres of government land free of cost to the civic body for the Mula-Mutha river improvement initiative.

The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The move is expected to help resolve long-pending land acquisition hurdles that had slowed down the ambitious riverfront development project between Sangamwadi and Bund Garden Bridge.

PMC has already initiated riverfront beautification and improvement works worth around ₹350 crore along the stretch. However, several parts of the project had faced delays due to pending land acquisition issues.

According to officials, the Revenue Department played a key role in facilitating the transfer of land to the PMC without any occupancy price or revenue charges. Authorities believe the decision will accelerate work related to river rejuvenation, flood control and green infrastructure development along the riverbanks.

Under the Mula-Mutha River Rejuvenation Project, the PMC plans to increase the river’s water-carrying capacity during floods, improve sewage treatment before releasing water into the river, and develop green belts, walkways and jogging tracks along the riverfront.

Civic officials said the project aims not only to improve the city’s environmental balance but also to provide Pune residents with cleaner and healthier public spaces.

Mayor Manjusha Nagpure welcomed the state government’s decision and thanked Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule for approving the land transfer.

Nagpure said Bawankule personally informed her about the Cabinet decision over the phone. She expressed confidence that the project would now progress at a much faster pace.

Land Made Available for the Project

The government has approved the transfer of land from three locations:
11,015 sq metres of riverbed land
34,128 sq metres from the Botanical Garden land at Mundhwa
7,708 sq metres from land belonging to the Women, Child and Reform Home at Mundhwa
Riverfront Project to Extend Till Manjari

At present, riverfront development work is underway between Sangamwadi and Bund Garden Bridge, as well as from Bund Garden Bridge to Mundhwa Bridge.

However, after the expansion of Pune city limits up to Manjari, a proposal was moved before the Standing Committee by corporator Dada Kondke seeking extension of the riverfront development project up to Manjari Budruk. The proposal has now received approval.

Officials said the stretch between Mundhwa Bridge and Manjari Budruk has witnessed rapid urbanisation and large-scale residential development in recent years. The PMC Standing Committee has therefore approved plans to extend riverfront improvement and beautification works up to Manjari.
