Pune: Road Safety Initiative On Mumbai-Pune Expressway From December 1

Pune, 30th November 2022: To reduce the number of accidents on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and old highway, and to create discipline among the drivers, a 24-hour road safety awareness and enforcement activity is being organized by the Transport Department for the next 6 months from Thursday (December 1).

 

In a meeting held on October 17, 2022, under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, all the concerned departments were ordered to implement various measures to prevent loss of life and money on the road.

 

On this occasion, orders were given for long-term public awareness and implementation to reduce the number of accidents on the Mumbai-Pune expressway as well as the old highway and create discipline among the drivers.

 

Accordingly, the Transport Department has taken up the initiative of the road safety program. For this activity, a total of 12 teams of officials from the Regional Transport Offices (RTO) of Mumbai, Pune, Panvel, and Pimpri Chinchwad in the motor vehicle department have been formed and 30 officers have been appointed in each team. Six teams and 15 officers will be working 24 hours a day on both highways.

 

Under road safety awareness and enforcement activities, various measures will be implemented on both highways. Under it, accident-prone places (black spots) will be surveyed, all measures will be taken for road safety and information boards will be displayed for the information of the drivers.

 

 

Immediate action should be taken against illegally parked vehicles on the road and removal of obstructions to traffic on the road. To create public awareness by announcing at the toll booths on both highways. Action will be taken against speeding vehicles through interceptor vehicles. Action will also be taken against vehicles moving at low speeds such as trucks, buses, containers, etc. in the right lane; wrongly changing lanes. Actions will be taken against the drivers and passengers traveling without a helmet, without a seat belt and other measures will be taken under this initiative.

 

To create road safety, the said initiative has been launched for the first time through the Transport Department for six months in the state. Under this initiative, for the first seven days, public awareness and announcements will be made at the toll booths on both the highways and through the PA system on vehicles. After that, action will be taken to comply with all the traffic rules.

 

The cooperation of the Maharashtra Road Development Corporation, Public Works Department, Traffic Police Department, Highway Police, NGOs, etc will be taken to carry out the activities successfully.

 

State Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar has appealed to drivers and citizens to follow the rules while driving. In the scientific analysis of road accidents, it has been seen that more than 80 per cent of the accidents are due to the negligence of drivers, careless attitude, and non-compliance with traffic rules.
