Pune, 29th July 2023: Addressing concerns over the driving habits of heavy vehicle drivers, particularly buses and trucks, the Pune regional transport office (RTO) has launched a series of workshops aimed at promoting safe driving practices. The workshops will be conducted in the Pune region, which includes Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad, and Baramati.

Starting next week, the workshops will be organized in collaboration with transport associations to ensure that all drivers in the region are covered. The main objective is to instill a sense of responsibility and promote safe driving practices among heavy vehicle drivers, ultimately enhancing road safety.

Sanjiv Bhor, Deputy RTO of Pune, emphasized the significance of promoting safe driving habits, especially in the wake of a recent bus accident on the Sumruddhi Expressway in Buldhana district, where 25 people lost their lives.

During these workshops, drivers will undergo detailed medical examinations and participate in lectures and interactive sessions that cover various aspects of safe driving. The sessions will include guidelines on handling different driving situations, adhering to traffic rules, avoiding drunk driving, ensuring sufficient rest before long journeys, and understanding the dangers of overloading.

Although previous campaigns have attempted to promote safe driving on highways, complaints about heavy vehicle drivers flouting traffic norms have persisted, particularly on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway, where lane cutting, wrong lane driving, and overspeeding are common occurrences.

While some commuters remain skeptical about the impact of these workshops, officials are hopeful that the workshops’ comprehensive nature, spanning several months, will bring about positive change and lead to a reduction in accidents on highways. The collaboration between the RTO and transport associations is seen as a crucial step in fostering safer roads and a more responsible driving culture among heavy vehicle drivers in the Pune region.
