Pune: RTO Pune Issues Alert on Fake e-Challan Messages Circulating on SMS and WhatsApp
Pune, 29 November 2025: The Regional Transport Office (RTO), Pune, has issued a public alert warning vehicle owners about fraudulent e-challan messages being circulated through SMS and WhatsApp. The fake messages claim that a traffic challan has been issued and attempt to trick citizens into downloading suspicious apps such as “Vahun Parivahan” under the pretext of identity verification.
One such message reads:
“Dear Vehicle Owner/Driver, This is to inform you that you have been issued a traffic challan. Challan Number: LA21071734311687. To confirm your identity and view the evidence, please install Vahun Parivahan app”
The RTO clarified that official e-challan notifications follow a specific format, typically stating, “MH12XXXXXX was found in a public place with violation of MV Act, 1988. Kindly see the notice https://rtomh.in/print?id=XXXXX and pay the fine amount. – RTO Pune.”
Authorities have urged citizens not to click on unverified links or download third-party applications mentioned in such fraudulent messages, as doing so could compromise personal data or lead to financial fraud.
The RTO further appealed to the public to rely only on official websites and verified government communication channels for challan-related information. Any suspicious messages or attempted fraud should be promptly reported to the Cyber Police.
