Pune: SC Grants Bail To Vernon Gosalves and Arun Ferreira In Elgaar Parishad Case
Pune 28th July 2023: The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to Vernon Gosalves and Arun Ferreira both arrested in connection with Elgaar Parishad case of Pune. The court while granting bail to the accused asked them to not leave Maharashtra and surrender their passports.
Further the court also directed them to use only one mobile phone and update National Investigation Agency (NIA) about their addresses. Besides, the court also said that the mobile phones of the accused should be charged round the clock to ensure that the investigation agency can connect them and keep a track on their addresses. The investigation agency has been advised to move court for cancellation of bail in case of breach of any condition.
The Bombay High Court had earlier rejected the bail applications of Ferreira and Gonsalves in the case following which they had approached the Supreme Court. The court while hearing arguments from both the sides had reserved the judgement for today.
It may be noted that Pune City Police had arrested these accused following the investigation into Elgaar Parishad case in which they had alleged maoist links. The police had also alleged that the Elgaar Parishad event organised at Pune’s Shaniwarwada on December 31, 2017 incited violence reported at Koregaon Bhima on January 1, 2018. The violence later turned into communal clashes in which one person was killed while some others were injured.
The police during an investigation had alleged that the accused were members of the banned Maoist organisation and they were involved in activities of the banned organisation. The case was later handed over to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for further investigation.
