Pune, February 5, 2021: Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) Pune, Deemed to be University of DRDO, MoD, has started the “School of Robotics” under the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Course of Robotics in Mech Deptt is active since 2015 but due to the advancement and interdisciplinary nature, the School of Robotics is established in 2020. The school aims to work on research problems and innovative projects that extend the state of the art in robotics. The school is actively involved in carrying out research in various areas mainly Humanoid, Mobile and Aerial Robotics, Motion Planning of Robots, Intelligent Robotics, Medical Robotics, Machine learning and AI in Robotics, Robot Dynamics and Control and Swarm Robotics. The School offers M.Tech, MS (By Research) and PhD programs in Robotics.

The School of Robotics at DIAT has well equipped labs with robot platforms and advanced sensors such as Fire Bird VI, ABB IRB 1200 – Six Axis Articulated Robot Manipulator, Spark V, Fire Bird V 256, Firebird V Hexapod, Dexter ER-2 Robotics Arm, Kinect (Xbox) Sensor, Maxbotix Ultrasonic Range Sensor, Vision Sensors, etc.

The School has also planned to expand its facility by proposing Aerial robotics and Advance robotics & systems laboratories. Proposed labs will be equipped with advanced work stations installed with high end software’s and simulators, along with required amount of actuators, sensors and various test beds, motion tracking set up for algorithm testing, different manipulator arms compatible with ROS and MATLAB softwares, mobile robots like Turtle bot, waffle pi, husky, etc. and controller like Arduino, Raspberry pi, Black berry, Open CR etc. Swarm robotics applications are also part of these lab facilities.

The School has collaboration with various research & development labs of DRDO, DPUSs, institutes and industries across India to provide an opportunity for students to carry out their research projects. Present collaborator are of CVRDE Chennai, CAIR, ADE, DEBEL, R&DE Pune, BEL, NAL, ISRO Bangalore, VSSC Thiruvananthpuram, TCS Pune, and IIIT Hyderabad.
