Pune, 22 June 2021: A sculpture of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj will be erected at Purandar Fort, about 40 km from here. Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Standing Committee approved the proposal during a meeting on Tuesday and sanctioned a fund of Rs one crore for the same.

Corporator Archana Patil submitted the proposal which was then approved by Standing Committee Chairman Hemant Rasane.

In 2017, a wall sculpture of Tanaji Malusare was placed at Sinhagad Fort. A financial provision of Rs 25 lakh was allocated by PMC’s Standing Committee for it. In the same way, a provision of Rs one crore was sanctioned for the sculpture of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Maharani Saibaisaheb. He was born on May 14, 1657 at Purandar Fort, around 20 km from Hadapsar.

Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was a knight but also an expert of the Sanskrit language and was very popular. After Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, he took the reins of the Maratha Empire in his hands and successfully carried out many campaigns.

“Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj was an extraordinary personality. His special qualities were unwavering courage, unparalleled prowess, and extraordinary bravery. If the sculptures of such a mighty great man are erected at Purandar Fort, ie., the place of his birth, then it will be a true homage to him,” stated Corporator Archana Patil.
