Pune, 3rd September 2022: India Junior International Grand Prix 2022 badminton tournament has been organised between August 30 to September 4, 2022. It is being reported that there was a leakage in four courts from the top of the roof and buckets were seen to catch the water falling from the roof.
Poona District Metropolitan Badminton Association (PDMBA) modern complex which is supposed to have world-class facilities, is said that it is now bringing shame to our country due to its lack of maintenance. The complex which is built in 1981, and since then this type of incident is the first.
Reportedly, due to the leakage, the semifinal match between India and Thailand and other matches needed to stop. It is also said that a player slipped two times in Court no 3. This tournament was organized by BWF (Badminton World Federation).
“It has been happening since the beginning and the court has become slippery making it dangerous for players. Today it rained heavily and roof started leaking. Badminton was born in Pune and today such a shameful thing has happened here”, said Raj Singh, a senior national badminton player.
In a statement, PDMBA secretary Ranjeet Natu said, “We had taken all precautions before the tournament and much ahead of the monsoons. Likewise, we also carried out necessary repairs. For the last two days, there was heavy rainfall with no leakage, but today’s rain in the evening was heavier than the ‘usual’ but certainly severe than normal that led to minor leaks on Court 2.”
He informed that repairs and rectification of the same will be carried out immediately after the ongoing tournament concludes on Sunday. Repairs will be carried out on a priority basis.
“The finals, as always, will be played on Court 1, which has no such issues. The incident was unfortunate and should be looked upon as a one-off in the given circumstances and the unpredictable nature of rain,” Natu added further.
