Pune, 28th February 2025: In a shocking incident, a 26-year-old woman was raped inside a Shivshahi bus in Pune, leading to an intense manhunt for the accused, Dattatray Gade. A total of 13 police teams, along with drones and dog squads, were deployed to track him down. Gade was eventually arrested by Swargate police from Gunat village in Shirur taluka around 1 am on Friday.
During his initial medical examination, doctors found rope marks on his neck, suggesting he had attempted suicide. Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar confirmed this, stating that Gade had tried to take his own life three times before his arrest.
According to police sources, Gade fled to his village after the incident, only to realize that a large-scale police operation was underway to capture him. As public outrage over the case grew, he allegedly made multiple attempts to end his life:
First, he tried to hang himself from a tree in a field, but the rope broke.
While on the run, he attempted to procure insecticide but failed to obtain it.
He then tried hanging himself again, but this attempt too was unsuccessful.
At a press conference, Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar detailed the operation that led to Gade’s arrest. “During the preliminary medical check-up, we found rope wounds on his neck, confirming his suicide attempts. He admitted to trying to end his life, stating that he survived because the rope broke and bystanders intervened,” Kumar said.
Gade has been taken into police custody and will be produced before a Pune court today. Authorities have assured that the case will be handled on a fast-track basis to ensure swift justice.
