Mulshi, 12th February 2022: A six-day-old baby born from a relationship with a cousin was dumped in Tamhini Ghat in Mulshi taluka due to pressure from relatives. Now, based on a complaint from the child’s mother Pune Rural Police, trekkers and villagers from Adarwadi have launched a search for the baby.

According to officials from the Paud police station, the baby’s mother (27) works as a labourer in a village in the Ghotawade area. Her husband has passed away and she has an 11-year-old daughter from her late husband. Since last year, she was in a live-in relationship with her cousin Sachin Gangaram Chavan, a native of Ambdas in Khed taluka of Ratnagiri, who was working as a labourer with her. However, when his brothers learnt about it they took him back.

As her delivery was nearing, she called back Sachin in December last year. She gave birth to a boy on January 30. However, their family did not accept this.

On the night of February 4, Sachin’s three brothers Sanjay Gangaram Chavan, Nitin Gangaram Chavan, Ajay Gangaram Chavan, again came saying they have to go to their native village. While passing through Tamhini Ghat around 11 pm, they made the woman and her daughter sit in the vehicle near a Daripul (bridge) and took away the baby. The four brothers returned after some time without the baby.

“When I asked they threatened to throw me and my daughter in the valley. They took us to Ambdas village in Ratnagiri and kept confined there. On February 10, they released me and my daughter”, the woman told police.

After returning to Ghotawade, she lodged a complaint against them with the police. The four accused have been detained and a search for the baby is going in the Tamhini Ghat area.
