Pune, 26th November 2023: A program commemorating Constitution Day was organized at Savitribai Phule Pune University by Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Chair and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Studies Center. Dr. Sukhdev Thorat, former chairman of the University Grants Commission, emphasized the importance of adhering to the values outlined in the constitution. Speaking at the event, he highlighted that societal actions often diverge from democratic principles, necessitating a commitment to constitutional values.

The ceremony, attended by dignitaries including Vice-Chancellor Dr Parag Kalkar and In-charge Registrar Dr Vijay Khare, involved paying floral tributes to the constitution monument at the SPPU’s main building. Dr. Thorat underscored Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar’s foresight in identifying ten challenges to embracing democracy, such as equality, administration, morality, and the treatment of minorities. He emphasized that failure to uphold these constitutional principles could lead to societal problems.

Dr. Thorat expressed concern that contemporary society still falls short of embracing constitutional values. Pro-Vice-Chancellor Dr Parag Kalkar stressed the importance of disseminating constitutional values during the ongoing nectar jubilee year of the Indian Constitution. He announced plans for various programs throughout the year to achieve this goal.

During the event held at the Sant Dnyaneshwar Auditorium, attendees, including academic and administrative heads, teachers, non-teaching staff, and students, collectively read the preamble of the constitution. An exhibition of informative posters about the constitution, organized by the NCC, was inaugurated by Dr Manohar Jadhav, head of Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Adhyasana, who also moderated the program.
