Pune: SPPU opens admission for M. Sc. Bioinformatics program

Pune, June 3, 2020:The admissions to M. Sc. Bioinformatics program at Bioinformatics Centre, Savitribai Phule Pune University will be made through national level entrance test of Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. After the announcement of the cancellation of exams for the first-year students, Savitribai Phule Pune University has now started the process of admitting students at the postgraduate level.

This year the admissions will be made through the Graduate Aptitude Test – Biotechnology (GAT-B) which will be conducted by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. The department has released the official notice which states that the online application form and all the details for the GAT-B (entrance test) are available on the website. The students interested in seeking admission to M. Sc. Bioinformatics may visit this site and apply for the entrance test on or before June 18, 2020.

The Bioinformatics Centre (D.I.C) at the Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune provides an up-to-date and a piece of accurate information in the area of Biotechnology with emphasis on Virology, protein and nucleic acid sequences, structures, Microbial strain data and also access to the other related areas through networks. Apart from answering the bibliographic queries and supplying the sequence data, the centre also offers unique facilities for data analysis. The hardware, software and the expertise available at this centre facilitate the users in every possible way. The centre is equipped with state-of-art services and facilitates in terms of hardware, software, information storage and retrieval.

The Bioinformatics Centre at the Savitribai Phule Pune University was established in 1987 as one of the nine Distributed Information Centres under the Biotechnology Information System (BTIS) of the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. The main aims of this centre are :

 

  • To function as an information base with resources of databases in the area of Biotechnology and Life Sciences
  • To generate information relevant to specific areas, structure the information and make it available to interested parties
  • To act as an active network node, in which scientists and entrepreneurs get access to the information resources available in the area of their interest
  • To identify and implement necessary information systems and software
