Pune 8th August 2023: The state government has granted in-principle approval to the proposal for the rejuvenation and conservation of Indrayani River. The proposal has now been sent to the central government’s National River Conservation Directorate (NRCD) for final approval. According to the proposal, a total of around Rs 500 Crore will be spent by the state and central government for the project.
With an aim to combat water pollution in the river the authorities have planned to establish 18 sewage treatment plants (STPs) along the riverbanks. A draft proposal prepared by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) was presented before the committee appointed by the environment department and the committee members have given the approval.
Stretching for 103.5 kilometers, the Indrayani River runs from Kurwande village to a portion of the Bhima River at Tulapur. Within the jurisdiction of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC), the project encompasses 18 kilometers. Notably, the PCMC has been assigned the responsibility of supervising the project on both sides of the river, while the remaining 87.5 kilometers falls under the jurisdiction of the PMRDA.
