Pune, 14th July 2025: Tensions flared at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) as students launched an aggressive protest in front of the university’s main building, alleging serious discrepancies in recently declared examination results—particularly in engineering disciplines—and demanding the implementation of a “carry on” policy to allow them to progress to the next academic year.

The agitation follows the announcement of results by the University’s Examination and Evaluation Board, which students claim are riddled with errors. Several students assert that their marks do not reflect their performance, prompting widespread dissatisfaction and calls for re-evaluation.

Student organization NSUI’s Akshay Jain highlighted an alleged inconsistency in the grace marks policy. “As per norms, 10% of total marks can be given as grace. For a 50-mark paper, 5 marks should be the limit. But we’ve seen cases where a student was granted 11 grace marks to pass,” he said, demanding accountability and fairness.

The protesting students have been chanting slogans and gathering support, prompting the deployment of police personnel on campus to maintain order.

The core demand of the protest is the implementation of a “carry on” provision, allowing students who have failed in one or two subjects to continue their studies without losing an academic year. Similar protests had been held earlier, but resumed with greater intensity as students felt their grievances remained unaddressed.

However, Dr. Prabhakar Desai, Acting Director of the Examination Department, maintained that procedures were being followed strictly as per regulations. “Students who have not secured the mandatory 50% credit marks are deemed to have failed. While we acknowledge the protest, decisions will be made following the university’s academic policies,” he said.
