Pune: Suspended Pune Tehsildar Suryakant Yewale Faces Fresh Heat Amid Long Trail of Corruption Allegations
Pune/Nagpur, 12th November 2025: In yet another chapter of Maharashtra’s recurring tales of administrative corruption, suspended Pune City Tehsildar Suryakant Yewale, already mired in multiple graft charges, finds himself at the center of a fresh controversy. His suspension in connection with the Bopodi land scam has reignited questions over how an officer with such a controversial service record continued to climb the bureaucratic ladder for nearly two decades.
According to official sources, Yewale’s career spans over 14 years across Nagpur city and district, where he faced as many as seven serious allegations of corruption. Despite multiple complaints and prior arrests, he reportedly managed to return to service after each episode.
Social activist Vijay Kumbhar took to social media (X platform) to question the decision-making behind Yewale’s transfer from Nagpur to Pune despite his tainted record. “Who brought him to Pune and why, despite several grave allegations? Who gave him an executive post? Is there political protection behind this?” Kumbhar asked, calling for transparency in bureaucratic transfers.
The controversy has also reignited debates around the Civil Services Board, a mechanism mandated by the Supreme Court to prevent arbitrary or politically influenced transfers. Questions are now being raised about whether the Board was bypassed in Yewale’s case, and if it indeed gave a recommendation, why its members should not also face accountability.
Further adding to the intrigue, Yewale’s very appointment through the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) has come under scrutiny. He appeared for the State Services Main Examination in 2001 and was selected in 2004 under the hearing-impaired quota with a total of 361 marks. However, doubts have emerged over the authenticity of this claim, with some alleging he may not have been eligible under that category, drawing comparisons to the infamous Pooja Khedkar recruitment scandal.
The 2001 MPSC batch itself was controversial, with allegations of answer sheet tampering and bribery involving 398 candidates. The Bombay High Court had subsequently cancelled all appointments from that selection round. Observers now point to that as the beginning of Yewale’s checkered career, questioning how an officer from such a tainted batch was allowed to continue in service.
A History of Scandals and Suspensions
Yewale’s record reads like a catalogue of corruption allegations.
-2011 (Umred, Nagpur): Caught red-handed accepting a ₹10,000 bribe; six charge sheets were filed, but inquiries reportedly stalled.
-2012 (Gadchiroli): Suspended for failing to report for duty, later reinstated.
-2014 (Sironcha, Chandrapur): Accused of taking ₹2–2.5 lakh per candidate in a Kotwal recruitment scam. The issue grew so contentious that even Naxal groups reportedly warned against corrupt officials.
-2016 (Indapur, Pune District): After using “connections in Mantralaya,” Yewale secured a post as Tehsildar. He was again suspended by the Pune District Collector for irregular land allocations and alleged collusion with the sand mafia.
Pattern of Influence and Survival
Despite repeated suspensions, criminal cases, and departmental inquiries, Yewale repeatedly managed to re-enter the system — allegedly through bureaucratic and political connections. His case has now become symbolic of how deep-rooted corruption and political interference continue to weaken administrative accountability in Maharashtra.
With his latest suspension in the Pune land scam, calls are growing louder for an independent probe not just into Yewale’s actions, but also into the officials and political figures who allegedly shielded him over the years.
