Pune: SWaCH Waste Picker’s Daughter Triumphs in Selection for Indian Navy

Pune, 18th April 2024: Shweta Pandit, hailing from Wanawadi and daughter of Jyoti Pandit, a SWaCH waste picker, is scripting a remarkable tale of transformation as she secures a coveted spot in the Indian Navy. Embarking on her training journey in Chilka, Odisha, Shweta’s triumph over adversity stands as a testament to her unwavering courage and resilience against all odds.

Born into the humble household of Jyoti Pandit, who toiled tirelessly as a waste picker to sustain her family, Shweta’s aspirations soared beyond the confines of her circumstances. Fueled by a deep-seated desire to serve her nation, she joined the National Cadet Corps (NCC) during her schooling years. Despite grappling with the challenges of transitioning from Marathi to English medium education, Shweta’s unwavering dedication propelled her to excel, culminating in an impressive 78% score in her 12th-grade exams.

Undeterred by initial setbacks in her quest to join the military nursing service, police force, and army, Shweta’s resolve remained unshaken. Drawing inspiration from motivational content, she embarked on an arduous self-study regimen, diligently preparing for the Indian Navy exams. Balancing academic pursuits with rigorous physical training, Shweta’s perseverance bore fruit as she excelled in the physical fitness test, medical examination, and written assessment.

Emerging victorious among 400 aspirants, Shweta’s stellar performance secured her a well-deserved place in the Indian Navy. Reflecting on her journey, Shweta expressed heartfelt gratitude towards her mother, the SWaCH Cooperative, and the Kagad Kach Patra Kashtakari Panchayat for their unwavering support, providing essential resources such as notebooks and school fees. She attributed her success to her upbringing, underscoring the encouragement she received from youth groups comprised of waste pickers’ children. Shweta’s indomitable spirit mirrors her mother’s steadfast determination.

Jyoti Pandit, a SWaCH waste picker and Shweta’s mother, expressed immense pride in her daughter’s achievements. Recounting her journey with SWaCH since 2013 and the challenges they faced, Jyoti remarked on Shweta’s relentless dedication, studying for up to 10 hours daily alongside rigorous physical training. Overwhelmed with joy upon learning of her daughter’s selection, Jyoti couldn’t help but worry about the extensive requirements for Shweta’s training program. Once again, turning to their organization, she sought assistance to raise funds for her daughter’s needs. Shweta’s accomplishments fill Jyoti’s heart with boundless pride and joy.
