Pune: Team WACO Urges AI-Based Traffic Management System for Congested Nagar Road
Pune, 25th September 2025: The WACO Welfare Association (Team WACO), a socio-welfare and public interest group from Wagholi, has demanded the urgent adoption of an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Traffic Management System for the Nagar Road stretch between Yerwada and Wagholi.
Nagar Road, one of Pune’s busiest arterial routes, caters to lakhs of vehicles daily and connects several residential complexes, educational institutions, IT parks, hospitals, malls, and commercial hubs. However, citizens have long complained of severe congestion, frequent accidents, and law violations along this corridor. Team WACO argues that the current infrastructure is outdated and unable to manage the ever-growing traffic load.
Speaking on the issue, Anil Kumar Mishra, President of Team WACO, said, “Nagar Road has reached a breaking point. The outdated traffic control measures are no longer sufficient to handle the volume. We strongly believe that AI-based solutions are the way forward to ensure safety, efficiency, and smooth movement of vehicles. Without such interventions, the situation will only worsen.”
In its official representation submitted to the Pune Municipal Commissioner, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), and the Chief Engineer (Projects) at the PMC, the organization outlined key demands, including:
Real-time AI-driven traffic signal optimization
CCTV- and AI-enabled enforcement of signal violations, wrong-side driving, and illegal parking
Continuous monitoring of accident-prone zones with dynamic response measures
Dedicated green corridor clearance for emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire trucks
Data-backed traffic planning for long-term solutions
Removal of encroachments and unauthorized roadside parking
Improved pedestrian and cyclist safety with proper footpaths and cycle tracks
Mishra further added, “Introducing AI into traffic management will not only reduce congestion but also save lives by minimizing accidents and ensuring emergency vehicles get priority. It is time for Pune to adopt smart city technologies in a meaningful way.”
Team WACO has called on civic authorities and traffic police to take swift action, emphasizing that technological intervention is critical for sustainable and safe urban development.
