Pune: Three Women Attempt Self-Immolation During Land Measurement, 11 Charged for Obstructing Government Work

Chakan, 3rd April 2024: In a distressing incident at Sablewadi in Khed taluka, three women attempted to commit suicide by setting themselves on fire while resisting Land Records Office officials who had arrived to enumerate the land. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning around 11:30 am.

Eleven individuals, including the women who attempted self-immolation, have been charged with obstructing government work. The accused include Ganesh Balasaheb Sable, Namdev Baban Sable, Changdev Baban Sable, Sandeep Namdev Sable, Bharat Bhausaheb Sable, Balraje Changdev Sable, Bapu Changdev Sable, and one other woman.

Dhananjay Thanekar, a Surveyor at the Land Records Office, Khed/Rajgurunagar, lodged a complaint at the Chakan Police Station detailing the events. According to the police, Thanekar and his colleagues were conducting government enumeration when the accused individuals arrived at the scene and vehemently opposed their efforts. Despite attempts by Thanekar to explain the situation, the accused individuals resorted to shouting, abusing government employees, and physically assaulting a helper. Furthermore, they seized a GPS machine and issued threats of violence, disrupting the government’s work.

Amidst the chaos, three women poured flammable substances on themselves and ignited them, prompting a swift response from the authorities. The Chakan Police are investigating this matter further.
