Pune: Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth to start MA Program in Indian Knowledge System

Pune, 16th June 2025: National Education Policy 2020 makes it mandatory to teach the elements of traditional Indian Knowledge System to the undergraduate students. So, there is need to have trained manpower to teach the relevant topics. In a bid to fill the gap that exists for such trained and qualified teachers, city based Shri Balmukund Lohia Centre of Sanskrit and Indological Studies of Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth has come up with a M.A. Indian Knowledge System program which will commence from the current academic year 2025-26. This was informed by Dr. Manjiri Bhalerao, Head of the Department of this Centre.

Dr. Bhalerao said, “This is the first such program to be introduced in the state of Maharashtra in Marathi and its duration is of 2 years spread across 4 semesters. Lectures would be conducted 4 days a week in hybrid mode including 2 days each of online and on campus mode. The on campus lectures will take place on the weekend making it convenient for the working professionals who wish to take up this program. The program is ideal for the current teachers who are already working in educational institutions and wish to upgrade themselves for teaching IKS and the final year students from any branch who wish to explore the evolving field of IKS.”

This M A Indian Knowledge System program has been designed by keeping the UGC and NEP 2020 guidelines in mind. Broadly, it will have subjects like ancient Indian Art and Architecture, Judiciary, Kautilya Arthshastra, Literature, Religion and Philosophy, Visual Art, Science and technology, Iconography, Sculptures, Yoga and Ayurved to name a few. The basic eligibility criteria for the course is Graduate from any branch. An entrance test in mandatory for taking up this course”, informed Dr. Bhalerao.

Shri Balmukund Lohia Centre of Sanskrit and Indological Studies was established in 1948 to offer diploma, graduation and post graduate programs in Sanskrit and Indological Studies. Subsequently, renowned Archeologist H. D. Sankalia took the lead to start various courses in Indology at the Centre in 1975. Since then hundreds of individuals having curiosity about the ancient Indian culture have taken up this program.
