Pune, 29th March 2023: A double-decker flyover and a metro line between Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar are proposed at Acharya Anandrishi (chowk in front of Pune University entrance) chowk on Ganeshkhind road. A deadline of November 2024 has been given to complete this project.

However, the completion date of this project is getting delayed due to the non-availability of the necessary permissions from the police for the construction of the double-decker flyover at University Chowk. Citizens living in Baner, Pashan, and Aundh commuting from here for work will have to suffer from traffic jams for some more time.

The work of the Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar metro project has been undertaken by PMRDA. A double-decker flyover is proposed for this project by demolishing the flyover at University Chowk. This work should be completed by January 2024, instructions were given in the earlier meeting of the Pune Integrated Metropolitan Transport Authority (PUMTA).

However, the work of moving the water channel in University Chowk was not completed by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) in time. Because of this, if the bridge work is started, the traffic will be obstructed, so the police had not permitted the PMRDA to put up safety barriers on the Ganeshkhind road.

At the subsequent PUMTA meeting, the police should be allowed to start work on the square. It was decided that the company should start the work as soon as possible before the monsoons. After that safety barriers were started along the road on both sides of the chowk to start the bridge work at the university chowk.

However, again these obstacles were removed by the police. The reason for the G-20 conference was given for the same. After that, permission is still not received from the police. Therefore, it will not be possible to complete the work of the double-decker flyover by January 2024 and the metro project by November 2024.

In 2020, on 14th July, the flyover on Ganeshkhind road was demolished. An agreement was signed with Tata Company on 25th November 2021 for the metro project and flyover work. The contract stipulates completion of work within 36 months. Apart from the work of the flyover, the work of the metro project has been started. In the PUMTA meeting on 22nd November 2022, a target was given to complete the work for the flyover by January 2024. However, permission has not yet been given to start work in the square.
