Pune, 5th October 2026: The Pune city traffic police have sent recommendations to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) seeking suspension or cancellation of driving licences of around 1,700 motorists accused of serious traffic violations, including drunk driving and dangerous driving.

The figure is lower than last year, when traffic police had recommended action against approximately 3,500 driving licences.

The intensified enforcement followed the May 19, 2024 Porsche crash in Kalyani Nagar, in which two software engineers were killed. Since then, the Pune traffic police have stepped up checks and enforcement against motorists driving under the influence of alcohol.

Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil said the police have also been tracking motorists who repeatedly violate traffic regulations.

“We have repeatedly taken action against drunk drivers, triple-seat riders and other traffic rule violators. We have also prepared data on motorists who are repeat offenders violating traffic rules and were found driving under the influence of alcohol for more than once. The driving licences of such people were impounded, and the licences were sent to the RTO office along with a letter recommending their cancellation or suspension,” Patil said.

According to the traffic police, a majority of the licences referred to the RTO have already been suspended, while the remaining cases are still under scrutiny.

Despite sustained enforcement, police officials said traffic violations continue to be reported across the city, with some motorists repeatedly disregarding road safety regulations.

The traffic police have maintained that action against repeat offenders is necessary to deter dangerous driving and improve road safety in Pune.
